Conclusion

As you can see throughout the earlier evidence a massive amount of money is spent on cancer research but what we are trying to conclude is whether cancer research is worth all the money being spent. Many improvements have been made due to the introduction into new technology and treatment improvements. All these improvements have been brought about by research. One of the main peice of evidence that proves that cancer research is really helping is that the survival rate for many common cancers has increased by more than 30 per cent in the past two decades. Another peice of good news is that more than half of the new cases of cancer diagnosed will be successfully treated. Research has also enabled cancer to be treated with vaccines like a recent breakthrough vaccine to prevent cervical cancer. This therefore shows that research has made a significant impact on the lives of patients with cancer.

Money Spent

Many foundations across the world try and raise money to cure and try and prevent cancer these organisations in Australia include: Cancer Foundation Australia, Cancer Council Austrlia, McGrath Foundation, National Breast Cancer foundation, Prostate cancer foundation plus many more. The table (above) shows the amount of money spent on Cancer research in USA alone.

Causes of Cancer

Cancers most commonly causing death are lung, prostate and colorectal cancers in males and breast, lung and colorectal in women, which together account for 59% of all cancers. Although these are the main cancers there are many others affecting people all over the world including Cervical Cancer, Gastrointestinal Cancer, Kidney Cancer, Liver Cancer, Lymphoma Cancer, Mesothelioma Cancer, Myelogenous Leukaemia, Oesophageal Cancer, Ovarian Cancer, Pancreatic Cancer and Skin Cancer. This table shows the new cancer cases per year in realtion to the cancer deaths per year.

Introduction

Cancer is the No. 1 killer of Australians. 1 in 3 Australian men and 1 in 4 Australian women will be directly affected by cancer before the age of 75. This shows that it is of huge importance that enough money is donated to find cures and ways to prevent cancer, although if the money is not used productivly then the huge amount of money being raised will simply go to waste.
